Leisure Isle

BIRDS

A large variety of birds are to be seen on the Island or in the surrounding salt marshes, but the shrinking of natural habitats has meant that several species are under great pressure, eg Spoiled (Dikkop) Thick-knee.

For many years a pair of Spotted Eagle Owls have nested in the gum trees along Links Drive and raised a couple of chicks each year.

The resident inter-tidal birds that feed on the rich pickings are joined each summer by large numbers of migrants from the northern hemisphere, who replenish their wasted bodies in the warm productive waters of the estuary after their gruelling flights of 8000 to 10 000 kms from their breeding grounds.

Preliminary list of birds on Leisure Isle and surrounding mudflats. (old bird names in brackets)
