Frenchman named Francois le Vaillant travelled along
the Cape's southern coastal belt, the aptly named 'Garden
Route', late in the 18th century and, more than two
hundred years later, his description of the countryside
is still appropriate.
He wrote evocatively of a 'chain of mountains, covered with lofty forests' and
of 'agreeable hills, variegated in an infinite number of shapes'. He wrote,
too, of 'the most beautiful pastures' and of the flowers, 'their colours,
their variety, and the pure air which one breathes - all engage your attention
and suspend your course. Nature has made these enchanting regions like a fairyland'
To 'suspend your course' is a sound piece of advice for the traveller
along this plateau between coast and mountain. There are many places at
which to stay and, as le Vaillant noted, there is much to see.

Cango Caves
The Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn
are among the biggest stalagmite formations in the world.
You can go for extensive subterranean walks in the widely
branching caves. Some of the sandstone formations are even
colourfully illuminated.
Tsitsikamma Forest
One of the best preserved forests in South Africa containing
enormous trees including a 36metre tall Yellowwood.
Knysna Heads & Lagoon
Knysna Heads are the most striking geological
features along the entire southern African coastline. They flank
a deep but potentially treacherous channel through which the
sea pours in to flood the wide and breathtakingly pretty
lagoon.
Featherbed
