3.5.3 IMPROVE ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE AND PROMOTE PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT
- Closure of a Portion of New Street and Union Street
Our proposal includes the closure of New Street and a Portion of Union Street. This can then be utilised as a pedestrian boardwalk to promote a
Cafe Culture in the area and will also tie in with the linear park concept. (See Previous Page)
Figures on previous page indicates the proposed closure and also shows that the possible closure of vehicular traffic, these streets will not have any negative impact on access to individual properties or access to the lagoon. This area will become pedestrianised to provide a boulevard, which will have a Café culture where you will be able to sit out and enjoy refreshments while overlooking a well-equipped public park to be created in this area. The Knysna Lagoon would become much more accessable to the people of Knysna. This new quarter will become a meeting place and new vibrant destination in Knysna.
New Street
It is proposed that these closed streets remain in the ownership of the Knysna Municipality, and that the developers fund the development of the
boulevard. The Knysna Municipality will then enter into a service level agreement as to the levels of maintenance that they will provide to ensure the upkeep of the area when it has been handed over to them. Vehicular access will be catered for on Union Street, for parking and deliveries.
Upgrading of Tide Street and Union Street
We envisage that Tide Street and Union Street will be upgraded to ensure adequate footpaths and street lighting of the area. It is proposed that all the developers of the area will meet this cost. We also see the boulevard as having adequate street lighting so that its usage can be maximized in the evenings. Euro Construction will provide funding to upgrade "Tide Road" and it's Street Lighting.
